Disc Jockeys are considered the life of any party these days. No night club seems to be able to do without them. Also called, “Deejays”, they play music creatively for radio stations or nightclubs. The radio Disc Jockeys (called Radio Jockeys) not only play music but also talk about the news, sports and hold talk shows with celebrities or even the public. The disc jockeys working for clubs mix music and create special effects apart from providing enthusiastic comments in between.

They have to not only carry out music recording but also be good talkers. They need to record the latest and most happening music and do it in a way that is sensitive to the dancers’ requirements. The job is certainly not an easy one as most disc jockeys have to work very late hours and may have to face a lot of isolation due to the nature of their job. Moreover, there is not a very huge market in small towns and to be successful; they have to move to urban areas for more options.

When working for radio stations, disc jockeys may not only have to be involved in audio mastering but also have to work all alone in sound proof, air conditioned rooms. They have to be very highly in tune to the latest issues to be able to chat while playing music. They have to keep track of the time and co-ordinate music, talk show, requests and commercial breaks. They have to be well prepared with spicy and interesting tidbits and organize the whole program.

Thus, while it may seem that the job is easy; actually the disc jockeys have to go through a lot of script creation and live and unprepared chatting with other people. Talking without any notes is rather tough because they have to forever think on their toes and be alert.

Moreover, a disc jockey needs to be able to work with all the recording software and studio equipments. They have to adjust sound and music and have erratic working hours. Since the radio stations are on air 24 hours a day, the radio jockeys can be called anytime of the day and must be always prepared. They must have good speaking voices and good grasp of the language in which they broadcast.

To start their career, disc jockeys may have to work free in certain clubs. Since there are no specific courses for this job, they have to be able to hold the pulses of their listeners. They may have to establish a good reputation as this career works very well by word of mouth. Normally, most disc jockeys follow a particular genre of music and are known for that specific type of music. They must also have some technical knowledge of recording studio equipment and should have the confidence to make the crowd dance to their tunes.

It is very difficult to get regularly paying gigs in this profession and so they have to be very well connected and aware of the various parties and occasions that need them. Most disc jockeys have different day jobs and use this as a part time job.

The author, Sarika Kabra loves making music. You can keep up-to-date with the latest music terms with the help of a music dictionary. Setting up a home recording studio is also not very difficult these days.

Have you considered a career in disc jockeying? It can be quite an exciting thing to do but it can also be a little bit scary as well. Being a disc jockey put you in the limelight at every party that you are playing at. The old saying is true, the DJ makes the party. So here are some point you should consider before journeying down the path of becoming a DJ.

First things first, make sure you mentor with another experienced this jockey before you invest into your own DJ business. You may find that you do not like disc jockeying once you’ve tried it. This is one job that has a certain romantic quality about it but once you have tried it you may not like it. Also an experienced mentor will help you to avoid a lot of critical mistakes that you could make. A good mentor should teach you the following traits, acceptable behavior as a DJ, moderating a crowd and proper selection of music as well as games.

When you are operating as a disc jockey there is a certain acceptable behavior standard that you should keep. One thing that I recommend above all else is not to drink alcohol when you’re being paid as a DJ. Some of your clients probably won’t care but many will. Also if you avoid drinking alcohol even if you offered by your client and you refuse it will show that you are a true professional. Abstaining from alcohol can also avoid sticky legal situations because indirectly you are responsible for the actions of the persons who attend the party you are disc Jockeying at.

That brings me to the second point, moderating a crowd. Depending on the style of music you choose to play can either excites your crowd or calm them down. Is your responsibility to ensure that they have fun but stay out of trouble. I have seen disc jockeys in the past play too many fast beat songs in a row and soon they find that their crowd starts to get a little too rowdy. This can lead to damages and damages can cost you. So learning how to properly moderate crowd is an extremely important skill to learn and understand.

And this leads me to my final point of this article, song selection. Not only is song selection important for crowd control but it is also important for the particular time that you are playing. Many clients who wish to have dinner music during their meal. This is the time for soft subtle music and not hard rock music. Also knowing when to stop playing requests from your patrons is very important to song selection. You can have a few patrons wanting obscure music from a particular album and you could lose the rest your crowd if you play too many obscure songs. But if you’ll play one or two over a night you could get those few individuals angry at you. In rare situations you find that the whole crowd will enjoy these obscure songs. In that case you may select more songs from the obscure pile.

If you’re thinking about becoming a DJ find a mentor is critically important. I wish you luck if you desire to seek this career path.

A friend that is also a wedding DJ called me to tell me that he lost business to another DJ that charges less then half his price. The DJ also told this couple that he basically does the same thing my DJ friend does. Really? How can they do that?

I found out that this DJ business is a full-time husband & wife team that spends a great deal of money on advertising. So how can they make a livable wage charging clients much less an the average rate? first, they also provide video, second, since they advertise so much and charge a minimal fee, they book more weddings per week.

The cheaper DJ is the better value, or is it? Sounds good, so whats the problem? Paying less is always better, only if your getting the same value for your money. Do you really love a low price? or do you love getting great value for the price?

The problem is, this DJ is not pricing his service enough, and therefore he has to book more weddings to stay in business and on top of that has to also run a second business in video to stay afloat. This means this DJ cannot give his clients the full time attention and quality service they deserve for their wedding. This is a disservice to their clients and to themselves.

These Disc Jockeys are no better than part-time or hobbyist DJ because they simply cannot or do not have the time to…

A. meet with their clients at their convenience.

B. properly plan their clients wedding and custom craft each wedding to fit their clients style. This means they more then likely will perform the same worn-out routine for every wedding. I call this cookie-cutter weddings, they play the same songs, do the performance etc.. for every wedding.

C. receive the proper education & training they need to be professional because of the lack of time & money. Every profession needs proper education & training, most mobile Disc Jockeys do not believe they need it. This is more than connecting wires & pressing play.

D. upgrade or even maintain old audio equipment because of the lack of money. This means that there is the possibility of bring shoddy equipment or equipment failure at the next event.

Over the years I have seen these Disc jockeys price themselves right out of the business, because they are afraid to raise their rates. They do not understand that in the long run, it is the quality of service that will ultimately keep you in business for a long time, even through a recession. What clients really want is value and quality for their money.

“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten” Benjamin Franklin

I got a call from a potential client who left a message on my phone. She had called me previously to see about booking my services for a Holiday party. She called back a week latter to inform me that she had booked another DJ that was more reasonably priced. This particular client had seen me work a 50th wedding anniversary party, that is how she found me for her party. I am guessing she never had a chance to see this other DJ in action. If so, then how in the world does she know the other DJ is more reasonably priced?

The biggest misconception out there is all Disc Jockeys are the same, and the cheaper DJ is the better value. If all food were the same, why wouldn’t we all serve McDonald’s for important catered events? After all, it is the cheapest and you get the same results, right? McDonald’s is reasonably priced for fast food, but we do not serve fast food for important events like weddings or Holiday parties.

Disc Jockey service is a talent based business, and it is also a personalized service not a commodity. Reasonably priced means that there is a reason why an item or a service is priced the way it is. If a DJ could charge more for their services, don’t you think they would? Ruth’s Chris costs much more than McDonald’s, Why? Better quality, better service. Yet both are reasonably priced for what you get. Quality costs more!

If you are planning an important event like a wedding, remember this is a get-what-you -pay-for business. Do your homework, compare apples to apples and find the best value for your money, and what will work best for your event. If that client I talked about at the beginning of this post actually seen this other DJ perform live at an event like she saw me, and performed equally, yet will charge her much less, congratulations, and more power to you. But something tells me that is not the case. The DJ you choose is a representation of you. If he or she gives a bad performance do not blame the DJ, just go back and look at the price you paid. You may need to blame yourself.

So what is a reasonable price?

Answer: A reasonable price is the price you pay that is equal to the service rendered.

Electronics and technology hadn’t yet evolved to the point where personalized music was available at the touch of the button. However, today you can get the best of both worlds with a disc jockey. These musical professionals provide live entertainment, tailored to your specific tastes and event. It’s so much more than just carefully picked music, though. Professionals are a part of the show themselves.

It doesn’t have to be complicated to choose a disc jockey. Like most things, the first place to start is with your friends and family. If you have been to a well planned event, that is even better. Let people know what you are looking for and ask for their opinions. They should be able to give you suggestions that will likely be a good fit for you. Once you have a few names, browse their websites, if available and get a feel for what the company has to offer. Finally, personally interview several candidates. While anyone can put up a flashy web page, it’s harder to fake a professional demeanor and attention to detail. These things can only be determined by talking to the musical professional yourself.

There are several things that you should be looking for during the interview process. The first is the personality; both yours and that of the disc jockey. Of course, the jockey is the center of the action and needs to be able to have the confidence and personality to effortlessly manage that responsibility. However, they also need to be flexible and in tune with you and your guests. If your guest list is conservative, the disc jockey needs to plan the playlist accordingly. In contrast, a young, hip crowd will go to sleep listening to oldies. Also, pay attention to how the person communicates and presents themselves. That will tell you a lot about what you can expect at your event.

Choosing a disc jockey doesn’t seem like a big deal. However, the right person can really take your event from obscure to out of this world. Don’t be afraid to ask around for recommendations. Once you have a list, carefully select the best match from the possible candidates. In the end, the extra effort will pay off with a successful event.
